Apprenticeships and Vocational Training: Pathways to Success in the Construction Indust

Apprenticeships continue to provide individuals with valuable opportunities to transition into new careers, equipping them with practical skills and industry-recognised qualifications.

One such success story is Romana Brodzinska, who, like many others, made the leap from an office-based role to a hands-on career in construction—proving that apprenticeships can be a powerful pathway for those looking to change direction.

The Value of Apprenticeships in Career Development

Romana Brodzinska received the award during her apprenticeship graduation ceremony on 7 March

Many individuals enter apprenticeships as a way to gain new skills while earning a wage, making them an attractive alternative to traditional education routes. For those seeking a fresh start, apprenticeships offer structured learning, mentorship, and on-the-job experience. In industries like construction, where practical skills are essential, apprenticeships are particularly valuable in bridging the gap between classroom learning and real-world application.

Romana Brodzinska’s journey is one example of how apprenticeships can open doors. Having started her career in administration, she transitioned into construction and, within a few years, completed a National House Building Council (NHBC) site supervisor apprenticeship. Her dedication and hard work were recognised when she received a "highly commended" award during her graduation ceremony—highlighting the impact that apprenticeships can have on career growth.

Opportunities for Growth and Progression

One of the key advantages of apprenticeships is the opportunity for career progression. Many apprentices, like Brodzinska, begin in entry-level roles but quickly advance as they gain experience and prove their capabilities. With the right support from mentors and employers, apprentices can move up the ranks—some even reaching management positions within a few years.

This structured approach allows individuals to build confidence in their roles, develop expertise, and contribute meaningfully to their industries. For those who may not have considered a career in construction initially, apprenticeships provide a chance to explore new opportunities and discover unexpected passions.

Recognition and Encouraging Women in Construction

Receiving the award on 7 March was an unexpected but proud moment for Romana. "During the ceremony, I thought it would be great to win, but I never expected it. Then suddenly, my name appeared on the screen. It’s amazing to be recognised and to know that all the hard work I put into my apprenticeship didn’t go unnoticed."

As one of only two women in her workplace, she hopes her journey will inspire more women to consider careers in construction. "We definitely need more women in this industry. We bring a different perspective, pay close attention to detail, and are often better at handling conflict and communication on-site," she said.

While some women may feel intimidated by the male-dominated field, Romana finds it empowering. "For me, it’s been a great experience, and I want to encourage others to give it a go."

Her journey proves that with determination and hard work, career shifts are possible—especially in industries where women remain underrepresented.

A Pathway to a Rewarding Career

For those considering a career change, apprenticeships offer an accessible and structured route into a variety of industries. Whether in construction, engineering, healthcare, or IT, apprenticeships provide hands-on experience, professional qualifications, and a clear progression path.

Brodzinska’s story is just one of many that demonstrate how apprenticeships can lead to fulfilling and successful careers. With more employers investing in apprenticeship programs, there are increasing opportunities for individuals to upskill, change careers, and thrive in new industries.
