Dron & Dickson’s £100k Investment in Net Zero and the Growing Need for Electrical Training
Dron & Dickson Ltd, the UK’s only specialist supplier of electrical equipment and engineering solutions for harsh and hazardous environments, is leading the way towards a greener future. With a bold commitment to reach net zero by 2030, the company has invested over £100,000 in sustainable initiatives — reflecting the wider shift across industries as businesses align with the UK government’s net zero targets.
This transformation isn’t just about cutting emissions; it highlights the critical need for skilled professionals to support the energy transition. As the demand for renewable energy and sustainable infrastructure grows, so does the need for qualified electricians and engineers equipped to power the UK's low-carbon future.
Driving Change Through Sustainable Investment
With locations stretching from Aberdeen to Lowestoft, Dron & Dickson has made significant strides in reducing its environmental impact. The company has saved nearly 6,500 litres of fuel by converting its vehicle fleet to fully electric (EV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models — a change that mirrors the UK government’s ban on new petrol and diesel cars by 2035, as part of its net zero strategy.
Additionally, Dron & Dickson has switched to renewable energy providers and partnered with waste management specialist Envirovue to eliminate carbon emissions from waste across its six UK sites. Through detailed waste tracking technology, the company has achieved 100% carbon neutrality for its waste operations, with zero landfill contributions.
Lorne Entwistle, Director at Envirovue, explained:
"We’ve created a robust strategy with Dron & Dickson to streamline, segregate, and monitor waste. Our live database tracks waste streams and their carbon emissions, helping to maintain carbon neutrality. We’ve also helped cut unnecessary third-party costs and achieve complete landfill diversion."
A Business Adapting to the Energy Transition
Originally serving the oil and gas sector, Dron & Dickson is expanding its services to support new energy and hazardous industrial sectors, with a seventh site set to open in Teesside. This mirrors the UK's transition away from fossil fuels, driven by policies such as the Net Zero Strategy: Build Back Greener, which outlines plans to decarbonise the electricity system by 2035.
Lenny Collins, Managing Director at Dron & Dickson, highlighted the company’s history of adapting to change:
*"As we approach our centenary year in 2027, we find ourselves navigating another energy transition — something we’ve successfully done before. After pivoting from mining to oil and gas in the 1970s, we now recognise the need to diversify again to ensure both environmental and business sustainability.
We’re proud to work with major operators funding private investment into UK low-carbon projects. At Dron & Dickson, we’ll ensure the energy transition is managed sensibly and safely across our client base. Everyone has a part to play in the net zero journey, and collective contributions will make a significant impact."*
