UK Weather Update: Late August Heatwave Set to Bring Sunshine and High Temperatures

As summer draws to a close, parts of the UK are poised to enjoy one final burst of warm weather, with temperatures expected to soar in the coming week. An Iberian blast, making its way northwards from Spain, is set to bring a welcome return of sunshine and warmth, with some areas of England forecasted to reach temperatures as high as 28°C.

According to advanced weather maps, the heatwave will begin to make its presence felt in southern England by Wednesday, August 28. The MetDesk has revealed a striking weather map, showing parts of Europe, particularly central Spain, enveloped in intense heat. Seville, for instance, is expected to experience a scorching 40°C on Sunday.

The Iberian warmth will then move north, impacting southern England mid-week. The BBC Weather Service predicts that London will experience a consistent stretch of warm weather, with temperatures reaching at least 26°C daily from Wednesday, August 28, to Wednesday, September 4. This extended period of warm weather suggests that the UK may experience one last heatwave before autumn fully takes hold.

Potential for Extreme Heat

James Madden from Exacta Weather has indicated that this upcoming heatwave could bring even higher temperatures. Madden suggests that as the new high-pressure system settles over the UK, temperatures could climb into the mid-30s, particularly as the pattern change ushers in warmer airflows. "There is no reason as to why we couldn't see further extreme temperatures in at least the low to mid 30s during these developments," he noted.

The Met Office supports this outlook, predicting that the south and east of the UK will experience a period of settled, warm weather, potentially extending to the rest of the country by the middle of next week. This could result in conditions that are warmer than average for early September, with many areas expected to remain dry and sunny.

Stormy Start Before the Sunshine

However, before the sunshine arrives, parts of the UK will need to endure a bout of unsettled weather. Storm Lilian is expected to bring strong winds and rain to the north of England and southern Scotland on Friday. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning, with gusts potentially reaching up to 80mph in some areas. This could lead to travel disruptions, particularly on major routes like the M6, A66, and A1(M).

Despite the stormy weather, temperatures will remain mild, and the weekend is expected to bring more settled conditions. While some areas may experience the odd shower on Saturday, Sunday and Monday are forecasted to be largely dry, setting the stage for the anticipated heatwave.

A Warm End to Summer

As the UK braces for this late-summer heatwave, it’s clear that the upcoming week will offer a final taste of summer before the cooler autumn months set in. With the possibility of temperatures rising into the 30s, this period of warm weather could be one of the last opportunities to enjoy the sunshine before winter arrives. Whether you’re planning outdoor activities or simply soaking up the sun, the coming days promise to bring a much-needed dose of summer warmth.
