UK Consumers Advocate for Increased Government Support for Renewable Energy

According to new research by Solar Together, nearly 90% of UK energy consumers are advocating for increased Government incentives to promote the use of renewable energy sources in their homes (Solar Together). This widespread support underscores the growing public demand for policies that make renewable energy more accessible and affordable for households across the country.

With the general election approaching, the study emphasises the urgent need for enhanced Government support to help households transition to renewable energy, thereby contributing to the UK’s ambitious net-zero targets (UK Government Net Zero Strategy). The call for more robust incentives highlights the critical role of government intervention in accelerating the adoption of sustainable energy solutions.

Key Drivers Behind Solar Energy Adoption

The research highlights that the rising cost of living and heightened awareness of the climate crisis are the main drivers behind the growing adoption of solar energy in the UK. Many households are increasingly motivated to switch to renewable energy not only to reduce their carbon footprint but also to manage escalating energy bills. However, the study reveals that the perceived high costs of installing solar panels deter 47% of households from making the switch, suggesting a significant barrier that needs to be addressed (Energy Saving Trust).

Among those who have installed solar panels, a third cited combating climate change and reducing carbon emissions as their primary motivation. Another 31% mentioned that they installed solar panels to mitigate rising living costs and energy bills over the past two years. Post-installation, 47% of these households reported significant reductions in energy costs, while 37% experienced moderate savings (BBC News).

Growth in Solar Panel Adoption and Changing Habits

The study also found that the number of households with solar panels in the UK increased by 30% in 2023. Furthermore, 35% of respondents who do not currently have solar panels indicated they are likely to switch to solar energy within the next five years. Over three-quarters of all respondents believe that renewable energy is as reliable and effective as traditional energy sources (The Guardian).

Energy consumption habits have evolved significantly with the increased installation of solar panels. More than a quarter of solar panel owners have become more mindful of their energy use, actively seeking to reduce consumption. This shift towards greater energy awareness and conservation reflects a broader trend across the UK as households look to minimise their environmental impact (Which?).

Widespread Concern Over Energy Usage

Nearly 70% of all respondents expressed concern about their current energy usage, highlighting the growing public awareness and anxiety over energy consumption and its environmental implications. This concern is driving a nationwide trend towards energy conservation and the adoption of more sustainable practices (Independent).

Insights from Industry Leaders and the Impact of Solar Together

George Frost on the Benefits of Solar Panels

George Frost, UK Country Manager at iChoosr, remarked on the survey findings: "The overwhelming majority of solar panel adoptees never look back – and this survey highlights just some of the benefits that making the switch can bring. From savings on energy bills and greater awareness of energy consumption to taking pride in doing something positive for the environment, solar panels are helping UK households alleviate some of the pressures from the rising cost of living and putting them on a more sustainable path for the future" (iChoosr).

Frost also acknowledged the challenges faced by consumers considering solar panel installation: "Through our conversations with energy-conscious consumers across the country, we understand that the perceived costs and practicalities of installing solar panels can be a barrier to adoption. However, there are now schemes such as Solar Together which deliver huge savings for households and entire communities, making the transition as smooth and stress-free as possible" (Solar Together).

Since 2015, iChoosr has collaborated with UK councils on the Solar Together programme to accelerate the nationwide transition to renewable energy. To date, Solar Together has facilitated over 31,700 installations, projected to reduce over 647,000 tonnes of carbon emissions over the next 25 years. This initiative demonstrates the substantial impact that coordinated efforts can have in promoting renewable energy and addressing climate change (Solar Together Impact).
